- Local leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Haiti and the Dominican Republic are working with civil disaster-response officials to help residents recover from the devastation left in the wake of then Tropical Storm Gustav. To expedite the response effort, Church leaders have purchased food, water, blankets and other emergency supplies locally and are working with officials to distribute them to those in need. We continue to monitor the situation as the storm travels toward other areas.
- Since Gustav became an imminent threat to the Gulf Coast region, the Church has been in close contact with the Texas and Louisiana emergency response teams as well as FEMA.
- As requested, supplies have been assembled and are being strategically positioned around the perimeter of the expected impact area. Where possible, the intent is to place the supplies where potential evacuees would most likely arrive and need them.
- The Church’s emergency storehouses surrounding the Gulf Coast are being stocked above ordinary levels and readied in advance of stormfall. (These are located in Dallas, Houston, Slidell, Atlanta and Orlando.) Emergency provisions include satellite phones, generators, hygiene and cleaning materials, linens, plastic sheeting, water and food.
- 100,000 additional hygiene kits (filling seven semi-trucks) are being sent to the region. Three of the seven trucks carrying the kits have already arrived.
- Truckloads of additional cleaning kits have been sent to the region.
- Trucks carrying 2,500 family food boxes left Salt Lake City this morning headed for the region.
- Forty missionaries serving in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission have been moved from New Orleans and the surrounding coastal areas to the city of Baton Rouge. Thirty missionaries in the Texas Houston East Mission have been moved from southeast Texas into Houston. All missionaries are accounted for and safe.
- Through local Church units, members with special needs are being contacted and arrangement made for their care and/or evacuation.
