At least 100 million individual names have been digitized from the City Hall archives in Manila, Philippines, as part of a larger preservation project with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Media coverage of the project is contained in the Manila Standard.
The records, including birth certificates, death certificates and marriage contracts, date back to 1886 and include records kept in city hall that survived destruction during World War II and Ondoy's flooding in September of last year.
Rex Peterson, a collection management specialist in the Church's Family History Department, said, "We have a good relationship with the people of the Philippines and wanted to act on this as soon as we could."
When completed, the project will convert 7,891 rolls of film to digital format, allowing for easy retrieval, sharing and preservation.
