Thousands Gather for Tabernacle Choir’s Concert in Mexico City

The “Esperanza” World Tour Performs at the National Auditorium

The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square is performing at the renowned National Auditorium (Auditorio Nacional) in Mexico City as part of their “Esperanza” (Hope) World Tour.

The Choir last performed at the 10,000-seat concert hall in 1972 and will return for a two-night event June 17-18. Additionally, for the first time in the Choir’s history, a live stream of the concert is available on YouTube.

High-resolution images, B-roll and SOTs are available for media use.

Following a format similar to the Choir’s Christmas celebrations, the concerts will feature guest artists and a narrator.

Singers Adassa and Alejandro “Alex” Melecio will be joined by distinguished radio host and journalist Mariano Osorio.

Choir Director Mack Wilberg said the musical repertoire transcends cultural and language boundaries through 17 songs listed in the program. Musical genres range from hymns to Latin American music such as the popular “La Vida es un Carnaval to be performed by Adassa and “Color Esperanza,” interpreted by Melecio.

The audience will be delighted with a message of hope presented by Osorio.

Other musical arrangements include the American folk song “Cindy” and the Nigerian carol

“Betelehemu” sung in Yorùbá as well as Wilberg's arrangement of “¡Ah, el novio no quere dinero!” the Sephardic nuptial sung in Ladino.

The timeless Mexican celebratory song “Cielito Lindo” is being prepared as an encore piece and a music video tribute to Mexico will be featured during the program.
