Nearly 15,000 people gathered for “Luz de las Naciones” (Light of the Nations), the annual celebration of Latin American culture hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Friday, November 3, 2023, the first of a two-night event.

President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency participated in the celebration and shared part of his opening remarks in Spanish.
“You are Hispanic pioneers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and you continue to enrich lives with your culture and your faithfulness in the restored gospel,” said President Oaks as he welcomed the audience.
The celebration was held in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, where 1,000 volunteer performers in traditional clothing brought to life beloved Latin American music and traditions.
Download Photo“It’s a spectacular celebration of our culture,” said Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, ahead of the event, “We can feel that love and fraternity because we are all children of our [Heavenly] Father.”
The 2023 theme for “Luz de las Naciones” is “Nuestra Tierra” (Our Land).

All rights reserved.The program, now in its 21st year, featured music and dances representing Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Spain.
“Today was so loving and so much fun,” said Nimba Juarez, who attended the event for the first time. “Not only that [but] just learning about the gospel, especially the part about learning about the pioneers.”
The celebration also paid tribute to the first Hispanic Latter-day Saint congregation in the Utah Valley. The Salt Lake Mexican Branch was established in May 1923 and grew to become the Lucero Ward.
“To be able to see [the Lucero Ward] grow exponentially and to see this kind of support from the Latino community is great,” said Monica Gomez who attended the historical congregation with her family as a young girl.
