The Church of Jesus Christ Joins an Interfaith Initiative for Peace in Mexico

On August 31, 2022, Elder Adrián Ochoa, first counselor in the Mexico Area Presidency, held a private meeting with the general secretary of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM), Monsignor Ramón Castro Castro. The meeting took place during the Interreligious Day for Peace, which was organized by the Episcopal Commission for Interreligious Dialogue and Communion of the CEM.

During the meeting, the religious leaders exchanged perspectives about the need to continue promoting peace in Mexican society and endorsed their commitment to continue working together for the good of Mexico.

Both leaders agreed that "from the depths of the hearts of human beings springs the desire for real and lasting peace as a sign and expression of true social coexistence."

At that meeting, a commitment was made to carry out five actions:

1. Pray for permanent peace in Mexico, inviting all people, whatever their creed, to join this initiative.
2. Raise awareness in religious communities that "peace is a gift from God" that is received and worked, affirming the value of all human life as sacred. It is not lawful for anyone to deprive a fellow person of life and liberty.
3. Stay united through dialogue to strengthen collaboration and common action between both churches.
4. Cordially exhort the authorities to find better and more effective citizen security strategies that guarantee social peace, fundamental rights, and freedoms.
5. Work to promote all forms of justice, solidarity, and love of neighbors, because in the hearts of religious communities, the words of Jesus resonate: "Blessed are those who work for Peace, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

The meeting was held at the offices of the CEM in Mexico City.
