Sites for Temples in Indonesia and Japan

Rendering available for the house of the Lord in Hungary

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the locations of new houses of the Lord in Indonesia and Japan. An artistic rendering of the Budapest Hungary Temple is also available.

Jakarta Indonesia Temple

The Jakarta Indonesia Temple will be built on a 1.33-acre site located at Synthesis Square, Jalan Gatot, Subroto No. 177a, Tebet District, City of South Jakarta, Special Capital Region of Jakarta.

Plans call for a four-story temple of approximately 40,350 square feet. Church President Russell M. Nelson announced this house of the Lord during the Church’s general conference in April 2023.

“Making covenants and receiving essential ordinances in the temple, as well as seeking to draw closer to Him there, will bless your life in ways no other kind of worship can,” President Nelson said before announcing Indonesia’s first temple. “For this reason, we are doing all within our power to make the blessings of the temple more accessible to our members around the world.”

The Republic of Indonesia, located in Southeast Asia, is currently home to more than 7,600 members in 24 congregations. The first congregation was organized in 1970 and soon after, the Church was officially recognized. In 1975, the first mission was established in Jakarta and in 1977 the Book of Mormon was published in Indonesian.

Osaka Japan Temple

The Osaka Japan Temple will be built on a 16.74-acre site located at 3-50-1 Sugi, Hirakata City, Osaka, 573-0117 Japan.

Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 29,630 square feet. This house of the Lord was announced in October 2023.

The preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ began in Japan in 1901. The Japanese Saints have shown great devotion to the gospel. In 1965, many sacrificed time and wages to travel to the temple in Hawaii. In the 1970s, this devotion led to the construction of a temple in Tokyo — the first temple in Asia.

There are five temples in operation, announced or under construction in Japan. The other four are the Fukuoka Japan, Okinawa Japan, Sapporo Japan and Tokyo Japan Temples.

Japan is home to more than 130,000 Latter-day Saints in over 230 congregations.

Budapest Hungary Temple

An artistic rendering has been released for the Budapest Hungary Temple, which was announced in April 2019. The location of this house of the Lord was released in October 2023. This will be the first house of the Lord in Hungary. Currently, Latter-day Saints in Hungary travel to Freiberg, Germany, to worship in a temple.

There are over 5,200 Latter-day Saints in more than 20 congregations in Hungary, a country in central Europe. The first missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ arrived in Hungary in 1885. Missionary efforts ceased for several decades following World War I. The Church received official recognition from the Hungarian government in 1988, and the first meetinghouse in the country was dedicated one year later.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from chapels and meetinghouses, where members gather for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered houses of the Lord where Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through sacred ordinances that unite families for eternity. Inside, members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to serve Jesus Christ and others.
