SALT LAKE CITY —; As one of a number of community events commemorating the tragedy and heroism of 9/11, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a devotional service featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to mark Wednesday, September 11, 2002, as a day of remembrance. The service in the Tabernacle on Temple Square will begin at 12:00 noon MDT. The public is invited.
Reflecting on the events of September 11, President Gordon B. Hinckley acknowledged the sober mood and anxiety many people have felt over the last year: "Occasions of this kind pull us up sharply to a realization that life is fragile, peace is fragile, civilization itself is fragile."
In a reaffirmation of civility, faith and freedom, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will perform sacred and patriotic musical selections. President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, will conduct the service, and President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency, will offer a message of solace, remembrance and encouragement. President Hinckley will be traveling in Europe.
Doors of the Tabernacle will open at 11:00 a.m. Tickets are not required for admittance. The program is expected to last approximately 30 minutes.
A live broadcast of the program can be viewed on KBYU-TV, (channel 11 in Utah) and on BYU Television, a service provided on the DISH Network and DirecTV. It can also be heard over KBYU-FM and on BYU Radio, on audio on the DISH Network, and on line at byuradio.org.
KBYU-TV will rebroadcast this event the same day at 8:00 p.m. and September 15 at 4:00 p.m. BYU Television will rebroadcast this event the same day at 9:00 p.m. and September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Other remembrance events scheduled on September 11 include a statewide moment of silence at 9:45 a.m. directed by Governor Leavitt. The American Red Cross will sponsor a series of commemorative events from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., including a memorial service at 9:30 a.m. at the Gallivan Center. The National Conference for Community and Justice plans a walk at 6:00 p.m. from the City and County Building to Franklin Covey Field where a concert for freedom, diversity and remembrance will begin at 7:00 p.m.
