Latter-day Saint Congregation Hosts “Sacred Spaces” Interfaith Event in New York

As part of the American Jewish Committee’s (AJC) “Sacred Spaces” initiative, a group of more than 40 people, including pastors, priests, interfaith leaders and New York State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer, visited a congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westchester, New York, in June.

The guests toured a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse, participated in a question and answer session with local Church leaders and attended Sunday worship services.

Philip Allred, bishop of the hosting Latter-day Saint congregation, says such gatherings help “bring down barriers to communication in our communities” and “emphasize the importance of religious observance in our society.”

The AJC’s partnership with Latter-day Saints in Westchester began two years ago with a shared commitment to increase understanding between religious groups and decrease prejudice.
