Public Invited to Tour Newly Renovated Oakland California Temple

The public is invited to tour the newly renovated Oakland California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The open house runs from Saturday, May 11, through Saturday June 1, 2019, except for May 12, 19 and 26, 2019. Free reservations for tours can be made through templeopenhouse.lds.org in the coming weeks.

The temple, located on 4770 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, California will be formally rededicated on Sunday June 16, 2019, in three sessions. Prior to the rededication of the temple, a youth devotional will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

The Oakland California Temple was the 13th temple of the Church when President David O. McKay dedicated it on November 17, 1964. The temple was the second in California (following the Los Angeles California Temple) and currently serves Latter-day Saints in the Bay Area of northern California. The temple is one of seven temples in the state with an eighth announced in Yuba City. There are currently 201 temples operating, announced or under construction throughout the world.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from the meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” where Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through sacred ordinances that unite families for eternity. Inside, members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to serve Jesus Christ and others.
