Plans to construct the temple were announced August 14, 1967, Church leaders broke ground September 15, 1969, and Joseph Fielding Smith, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1970 to 1972, dedicated the Provo Utah Temple February 9, 1972. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in central and eastern Utah. A second temple in Provo, the Provo City Center Temple, was dedicated March 20, 2016.
The 130,825-square-foot temple’s exterior is white cast stone, gold anodized aluminum grills, bronze glass panels and single spire finished in gold and anodized aluminum.
Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
