President Dieter F. Uchtdorf was given the Deseret Foundation’s 2011 Legacy of Life community honoree award 7 April 2011 during a banquet at the Little America Hotel.
President Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was recognized for his efforts to build people economically, socially and spiritually. The annual banquet raises money for heart and lung research.
“In these goals [of the Deseret Foundation] I see a significant parallel to the goals we have as a Church,” President Uchtdorf said. “One major goal of the Church is to improve the overall quality of life throughout the whole world.”
The evening’s Legacy of Life scientific honoree was Elizabeth H. Hammond, a physician and researcher at LDS Hospital and a University of Utah medical school professor. Hammond was recognized for her work in cardiac and pulmonary research, pathology and electron microscopy.
Other Church leaders who are past recipients of the Legacy of Life award include Church President Thomas S. Monson, former president Gordon B. Hinckley (1910-2008), Elders Russell M. Nelson, M. Russell Ballard and Neal A. Maxwell (1926-2004) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
