The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints welcomes all to view a special birthday broadcast in honor of Church President Russell M. Nelson on Monday, September 9, 2024 — his 100th birthday — at 4 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.
On June 1, President Nelson invited people to commemorate his 100th birthday by reaching out to “the one” in need, just as the Savior did, referring to His teachings in the parable of the lost sheep (see Matthew 18 and Luke 15). In the parable, the Savior encouraged His followers to reach out to others in need the way a caring shepherd would do for his sheep — looking beyond the 99 to reach the one lost from the flock. President Nelson encouraged people to share their experiences on social media using #99plus1.
A Living Example
Throughout his life, President Nelson has been a living example of caring for the one as both a disciple of Jesus Christ and a world-renowned heart surgeon.
President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, wrote in a June 3 social media post that during the past 40 years, “President Nelson has consistently taught me how to selflessly and lovingly serve others through his example.”
President Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, wrote in a June 5 post: “One of the virtues I have seen President Russell M. Nelson portray unfailingly is his genuine, heartfelt kindness, ... I think he must be the kindest man I have ever been associated with — and I have worked with a lot of good people! ... As we strive to follow the Savior, let us follow the example of President Nelson’s Christlike character.”
In an August 9 letter announcing the event, President Holland wrote: “How thankful we are for a prophet of God, his inspired teachings, and his invitations to follow the Savior’s example of love and righteousness in all that we do.”
The 75-minute broadcast on September 9 will celebrate the life and teachings of this latter-day prophet whose life and ministry continually exemplify God’s love for each of His children. Examples of what people around the world have done over the past 100 days to commemorate his birthday will be shared through stories from people who were “the one.”
You can watch the live stream on Broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org, the Church’s YouTube channel and the Gospel Stream app.
