The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced groundbreakings for the Quito Ecuador and Lima Peru Los Olivos Temples. Elder Enrique R. Falabella, South America Northwest Area President, will preside at both ceremonies.
Quito Ecuador Temple
The groundbreaking for the Quito Ecuador Temple will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019.
This will be the second temple in the country. The first one, the Guayaquil Ecuador Temple, was dedicated August 1, 1999.
Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple
The groundbreaking for the Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019. This is the first time two temples have been located within one international city.
The Church has two other temples in this South American country — the Lima Peru Temple was dedicated January 10, 1986, and the Trujillo Peru Temple was dedicated June 21, 2015.
Attendance at the groundbreaking ceremonies is by invitation only, with the general public invited to view the proceedings live from local meetinghouses.
Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.
