Damage is extensive in Christchurch, New Zealand, from a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Tuesday afternoon.
Seismologists are saying today’s earthquake is actually an aftershock of the 7.2 earthquake that struck last September.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is assessing the needs of those impacted by the quake and determining how it can best offer assistance.
The Pacific Area Presidency of the Church released a statement on the earthquake.
“We are deeply concerned for the people of Christchurch at this time. Many have lost their lives.
“We extend our love and sympathy to families and individuals who are grieving.
“As a church bearing the name of Jesus Christ, we will continue to do as the Saviour would have us do. We will work with government and other groups to bring help, healing and hope to those affected by this disaster.” To read the entire statement click here.
Church-specific information: The Church has confirmed that all missionaries in the area are safe and accounted for.
Local Church leaders are contacting Latter-day Saints throughout the city to confirm their safety and well-being so immediate support can be mobilized.
The Church is also assessing damage to its buildings.
