The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created the 15th stake in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on Sunday, February 9, 2025. (A stake is collection of smaller congregations known as wards.)
Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, President of the Church’s Africa Central Area, presided over a special conference of the Kinshasa Stake, which included the reorganizaton of the Kinshasa Stake and creation of the new Limete Stake.
The events demonstrate the growth and vitality of the Church in the area, and leaders hope these changes strengthen members’ commitment to follow gospel teachings and serve with dedication.
After recently being called to preside over the Lubumbashi Mission with his wife, Julie, President Tommy Mbuyamba Muhemedy was released from his call as president of the Kinshasa Stake along with his counselors, Brothers Dieumerci Kalonji as first counselor and Rony Luyatu as second counselor. This release has resulted in the reorganization of the Kinshasa Stake.
Elder Jeffery R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, assigned Elder Mutombo, assisted by Elder Haboko, an Area Seventy, to fulfill the sacred duty of selecting new leaders for the Kinshasa and Limete stakes. The brethren were introduced and proposed to the congregation and were unanimously sustained.
The Kinshasa Stake includes the Bandalungwa, Bumbu, Kasavubu, Kintambo and Ngiringiri wards, and Brother Nday Kabamba Balthazar was sustained as stake president with Brother Thsienda Mutala Russel as the first counselor and Kalemba Jean-Paul as the second counselor.
The Limete Stake includes the wards of Kingabwa 1, Kingabwa 2, Limete 1, Limete 2, Ndanu 1 and Ndanu 2. Brother Luyatu Kiese Rony was sustained as stake president, with Brother Matondo Nzita Delphin as the first counselor and Brother Johnny Kahambwe as the second counselor.
The conference featured outgoing leaders and newly called leaders who shared their testimonies of God’s work, the temple, and the truth of the restored gospel. Elder Mutombo, who closed the conference, urged greater commitment to obeying God. “When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes your pursuit,” he said, “that’s when miracles happen in your life.”
