On March 6, missionaries in the Nigeria Lagos Mission joined the general presidents of the Relief Society and Young Women organizations for a devotional, as part of their West Africa tour.
Sister Jean B. Bingham, Relief Society general president, taught the full-time missionaries about the spiritual patterns that God created to ensure order in the universe.
Her husband, Brother Bruce B. Bingham, set the tone for the meeting by talking about how he and his wife continually strive to support each other.
“I listen to my wife, and I gain from her ideas and counsels,” he said. He also encouraged the missionaries to strive to marry in the temple.
Sister Bingham sang a Primary song, “Keep the Commandments,” with the missionaries as a reminder that we can use the song to guide our lives. “Commandments are gifts to help discern truth from error.”
In her training, Sister Bonnie H. Cordon, Young Women general president, said that her husband has been very supportive of her Church callings, and she has also supported him in his ecclesiastical duties. “Now he carries my bag,” she said. Her husband, Brother Derek Cordon, replied, “It is an honor.”
Sister Cordon led a participatory activity to reinforce the importance of counselling together. She taught that missionaries should prayerfully listen, participate and act on promptings as they work in unity with their companions.
Elder Hugo F. Martinez, second counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency, encouraged the missionaries to keep teaching repentance so that new members can be baptized.
