Apostles Get First Pitch Honors in the Major Leagues 

Elder David A. Bednar throws first pitch at Astros game

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles participated in throwing the ceremonial first pitch for a game in the major leagues. The pitch was thrown for Family Night at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, on Monday, July 22 where the Houston Astros faced the Oakland Athletics.

Elder Bednar’s pitch – a strike – was caught by former major league baseball pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who is currently serving as the Texas Houston South Mission president. Many members of the Bednar family were present for the event.

One hundred and fifty missionaries in the Texas Houston South Mission performed the national anthem.  

The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing was also in recognition at the game. 

The Astros finished the evening with an 11–1 win against the Athletics. 

Elder Neil L. Andersen throws first pitch at Dodgers game 

As the Dodgers prepared to face off against the Miami Marlins in Los Angeles, California, on Friday, July 19, thousands of Church members and friends witnessed Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles throw the first pitch in Dodger Stadium. It was caught by local leader Elder Gary Wilde, positioned at home plate.

Attendees were also encouraged to participate in pregame festivities, including the collective singing of the national anthem. Children from local Latter-day Saint congregations were invited to sing with Dodgers players on the field. The players also presented them with autographed baseballs.

The list of Church leaders who have participated in the ceremonial first pitch at this annual event spans more than 40 years. Originally named Mormon Night, the Dodger Stadium event has most recently hosted pitches by members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, including Elder Neil L. Andersen's previous pitch, Elder David A. Bednar, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland and Sister Linda K. Burton, former general president of the Relief Society. It was a win worthy of post-game fireworks as the home team Dodgers defeated the Marlins 2 - 1.
