Elder Ulisses Soares, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ, marked the occasion in front of a live audience of more than 13,000 people on November 5 in the Conference Center on Temple Square. “We are so grateful for everyone who has shared their talents with us tonight, and for everyone who has done so over the last 20 years.”

Elder Soares spoke to the majority Spanish-speaking audience in their native language. “’Luz de las Naciones’ has celebrated and continues to celebrate the rich Hispanic culture,” he said.

The Conference Center stage was filled with a bright display of dancers, musicians and a 200-person choir who presented a variety of performances from several Latin American countries including Cuba, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Colombia. Beloved songs featured in the celebration were “La Vida Es Un Carnaval,” “Candú,” and “México Lindo y Querido.”

“We are so far from our countries that it is really fun to feel this connection,” said Ariana Abadia, who attended the live event. “We need this thing that can make us know that we are not alone, and we are together, we have a friend.”

Celebrating the event’s 20th anniversary with this year’s “Better Together” theme was especially fitting, said Elder Soares. “It’s so wonderful to be together again. This COVID has been so lonely and has caused people to be away from each other and we [of Latin American culture) love to be together. I think this means a lot for us, it’s the first time we [have met] together after COVID.”

Due to pandemic measures, virtual events were held in 2020 and 2021.
